The official birthday of the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) is December 2, 1970, created during the Nixon Administration.

A major piece of legislation, the Clean Air Act, was signed in 1970. The act required the EPA to establish national air quality standards as well as national standards for significant new pollution sources and for all facilities emitting hazardous substances.

The EPA is part of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government and reports directly to the President of the United States.

The administrator of the EPA is Lisa Jackson, she has a staff of more than 17,000 people working across the nation.
